Local Place Plan
Edinburgh Old Town Development Trust and Edinburgh Old Town Community Council have prepared a Local Place Plan - a community-led document that will influence how Edinburgh’s planning policies apply to our area.
Over April, May and June 2026, we have engaged with the local community including people who live and/or work in the Old Town and people who visit often on what they like and don’t like about the Old Town, what they feel is missing and what they want to protect or change. We have done this through an online survey, a number of drop in events as well as through speaking to people in the streets. We have now evaluated all feedback and five key themes have emerged:
- Sustainable tourism and housing
- Safety
- Quality streets and amenities
- Traffic and maintenance
- Community
We have developed 34 solutions based on the five themes. We are urging the City of Edinburgh Council to implement these now, and to include them in the City Plan 2040. These solutions aim to improve the Old Town for everyone – residents, workers, and visitors. We want an Old Town that we can be proud of.
We are currently developing a community action plan to address some of the challenges our unique neighbourhood is facing. We want to take action as a community and we need your help.
